Abdulaziz Khattak

Director

Two things I love doing are journalism and philanthropic work. I’m Abdulaziz Khattak, and with over 20 years in journalism, I’ve merged these passions in a meaningful way. As the Editor of Oil & Gas News (OGN), a Bahrain-based global energy magazine, I’ve helped transform it from a traditional oil and gas publication into a leading voice on sustainability and energy transition.

Since I took on the role in December 2019, OGN has undergone a significant makeover. We’ve moved beyond just oil and gas, diving into critical issues like carbon emissions, net-zero goals, new energy technologies, and climate chance. Our focus now is on engaging with industry experts and stakeholders to drive impactful discussions and solutions for a greener future.

My commitment to environmental causes extends beyond my work at OGN. After relocating to Orillia, Canada, with my family in 2023, I immediately connected with Sustainable Orillia, a local organisation dedicated to creating a sustainable future. Their impressive work, despite their small size, aligns perfectly with my belief in the power of grassroots efforts for environmental change.

I’m passionate about ensuring a fair energy transition, advocating for equal access to natural resources while gradually shifting to cleaner technologies. This belief has driven me to get involved in other similar  but journalistic initiatives, such as with the Sustainable Journalism Partnership, the Clean Energy Wire (CLEW), and the Oxford Climate Journalism Network. These roles help me highlight climate challenges and contribute to global sustainability efforts.

With an MBA and further training from institutions like the UNSSC, the University of Oxford, Reuters Institute, and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, I see myself as a lifelong learner. This ongoing education supports my work in climate advocacy and journalism.

Born in Bahrain with Pakistani Pashtun (Afghan) origins, I bring a rich cultural perspective to my work. Fluent in English, Arabic, Urdu, Pashto, Balochi, and Punjabi, I embrace diverse viewpoints and find common ground across cultures.

In my roles, whether at OGN or on the board of Sustainable Orillia, I believe in the power of collaboration. Great results come from working together, even with competitors. My family and I are excited to make Orillia our home and continue contributing to a more sustainable world.
