This is an open challenge to the public that will begin May 11th and end June 8th (measured as a four week period not a calendar month) to celebrate Bike to Work Day in Canada and other bike challenges that occur around the world in the months of April and May. Instead of driving a car, ride your bicycle to work or school for the next 4 weeks ending Friday, June 8th, 2024. In this challenge EVERY TRIP COUNTS – even trips to the grocery store, going for a pleasure ride, or recreational biking on trails etc. – they all count!

Date: April 26th

Time: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Location: Orillia Recreation Centre, Multipurpose Room B, 255 West St. S., Orillia

Plan to attend this FREE event which will include presentations about:

-the Simcoe County 160km Loop Trail,
-the health benefits of cycling
and your opportunity to get free handouts of trail maps for Simcoe County and cycling guides and have a chance for a door prize donated by a local bike shop.

The Challenge

The challenge is not a race but a personal challenge for participants to do their best to ride instead of driving or being driven in a car to work or school. E-Bike users are welcome but will be asked not to use above the first level of assist (based upon the honour system). Routes will be left up to the discretion of participants and will not be supervised by Sustainable Orillia; participants will be required to sign a waiver. The kilometers and number of trips made by participants will be recorded using STRAVA. Non Strava users will be required to keep a record of their distances and trips on provided record forms. At the end of the challenge the “winners” will be declared and prizes awarded based on their Strava/record form data. The challenge is not limited to Orillia residents and will be open to anyone in Simcoe County.

There will be two age categories for the challenge: children (14 years old and under) and adult. The event will be promoted at the schools; any student from any school in Simcoe County is welcome to participate with parental/legal guardian consent and a signed waiver. Any participants under the age of 18 years old will require permission from a parent/legal guardian. Prizes will be awarded as per below:

Individual:

  • The 3 highest total KM. will be awarded first, second and third place
  • The 3 highest total number of cycling trips will be awarded first, second, and third place

Team:

  • Participants are allowed to compete as a member of a team of three
  • The 3 highest team total KM. will be awarded first, second and third place
  • The 3 highest team total number of cycling trips will be awarded first, second, and third place

Community:

Final cumulative distance will be totaled, to see if we collectively met the challenge of travelling across Canada, a distance of 7560 KM. If this distance challenge is obtained Sustainable Orillia or other sponsor will donate to a local social justice charity.

Workshop 1: Sunday, April 28
Workshop 2: Sunday, May 26
Workshop 3: Sunday, June 9
Sustainable Orillia Community Engagement Workshops

Former mayor Steve Clarke will lead a series of three public workshops designed to help shape our community’s future. Residents from Orillia, Township of Severn, Township of Oro-Medonte, Township of Ramara, and Rama First Nations are encouraged to join any one or all three.

How should we be feeding ourselves? Where should we be living? How should we move around? How should we be heating and cooling our homes and work spaces? Where should our electricity come from? How should we protect our natural environment?

All of these questions and more will be up for citizen input and discussion during these three workshops, scheduled for Sunday afternoons as follows:

Dates: Sunday, April 28;    Sunday, May 26;   Sunday June 9

Time: 1:00 to 4:30 p.m

Location: Quality Inn (formerly the Highwayman Inn), 201 Woodside Drive, Orillia

These workshops will be highly interactive, with the aim of seeking citizen input for developing and implementing a vision of a desired future for Orillia, a vision that holds promise of a healthy, happy, mutually supportive and sustainable place to live – for us, our children and our grandchildren.

The first workshop (April 28) will focus on the development of a set of community sustainability principles and a collective vision for a sustainable Orillia.

The second workshop (May 26) will invite the community to define the actions and projects that we collectively will undertake to achieve the vision, using the principles that were defined in workshop 1.

The third workshop (June 9) will focus on how Sustainable Orillia can best develop programs and projects and engage the community in supporting and promoting the actions and projects defined in workshop 2.

This process needs maximum citizen participation. Please plan to attend and have your say!our
