Mike Jones

Director

Mike has been a member of Sustainable Orillia since 2019. He is an active member of the Infrastructure and Energy Sector. Mike graduated from Glasgow University and did post graduate studies at University of Toronto and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). He is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) certified to practice in many jurisdictions, which has taken him across the country, into the high Arctic and around the world.

While with the Toronto School Board as a Civil/Structural Design Engineer, Mike worked to transform school playgrounds into more environmentally friendly child and community spaces with grass and trees. His work was recognized with an Ontario Renews Award and he was granted the Supervisory Officer’s Certificate by the Ontario Ministry of Education.


Mike chaired a committee of the Canadian Standards’ Association’s Public Safety Division, which developed a National Standard for playground equipment safety.


Following his career with the Toronto District School Board, Mike continued to do consulting work on various fronts. Today, he and his wife Barbara reside in Orillia, where both continue to be active in a number of community initiatives. In addition to his work with Sustainable Orillia, Mike is also the current Chair of the Hillcrest Seniors’ Residence and is an active leader in getting Orillia certification as a ‘Bird Friendly City’.
