Introducing Sarah Patterson

Sustainable Orillia (SO) is pleased to introduce Sarah Patterson as its new President. Sarah joined the SO board in 2023 and was elected president at SO’s annual members’ meeting on June 26, 2024.

Sarah recently relocated to Orillia from Toronto and lives with her husband, Kyle, her sister Jesse and her two teenage nieces, Maya and Norah. They all love being a part of the Orillia community and frequently open their lovely home to new friends and colleagues.

Sarah is employed as the President of Common Earth, an environmental educational organization where she develops and delivers courses pertaining to the meta-crisis. She is passionate about “helping to usher in the changes that we need in order to truly become a sustainable species. This means living within our planetary boundaries and creating large systemic change that can only come from changing the goals of the system.”

Sarah attended Trent University for a joint honours degree in French and Sociology, followed by graduate work at OISE (UofT) in Child Studies and Education. She worked for Scotiabank for 16 years in increasingly senior positions, predominantly in HR and Learning and Development, and subsequently worked for Canadian International Student Services (CISS) directing five summer camps.

Sarah believes that “the decisions we collectively make in the next decade are arguably the most important ones humanity has ever faced. I will do everything in my power to ensure that we are moving in the direction of a post-carbon, caring world.”

Welcome, Sarah!
